AIAF

WOO! Animation. The festival covers so many genres and styles that it would be difficult name them all. I watched all the screenings and found myself blown away by the magnitude of some of these animations.

Modern Europe

Persona; Ingmar BergmanThe prelude is about saying this is a film. The film shows a take on the results of prying into another persons inner-most self. If you spend all your time with someone you create a new persona based on how the two of you interact. In some situations one persons persona will be stronger than the other but when the situation changes then the other may come to bare. These two women send so much time together that they form a new persona that is based on their interactions. One talks the other listens, listens and learns, becoming more a part of her.

They switch persona's and balance each other but ultimately the film is about being a film. The character is the person who the audience sees and hears, while the actor exists as a part of them. If the character may cause the actor harm however then the actor will speak up.

Possibly if the actor spend to much time pretending to have another persona they will in the end take that persona on.
Documentary style works really well with this story. The basis resonates as a film about a country for a country. A smooth, coherent and up beat way of telling a serious story.

French New Wave

Rendezvous; This short film was, on multiple levels, fascinating to me. From a film makers point of view; I really like the idea of a single shot is the entire film. Not only that but it is not even a shot of the characters it is just a car driving along. It is a journey in the most literal form. From a modern film maker and "techies" point of view; now that would be easy with action cameras such as Go Pro's ect. whereas then it would have been a large camera somehow attached to the car. From a car enthusiasts point of view; you don't need any other sound track. And finally as someone who loves European history and architecture; I did not see some of these places when in Paris.

Breathless; The only thing I really drew from this was that no matter what happens if you lay down your guns and give up this film would have no purpose. "In the face of defeat, stand and laugh"

Rust and Bone

This film did not play at Forum 6 cinema on the Monday

Film Noir

Double Indemnity; Billy Wilder
Still a popular genre; Film Noir somehow catches ones attention and drags you through the story weather it is good or bad. The unpleasant nature of the story gives the film an attractive aura, somehow as viewers we want to take part in the story because we are not part of the story. As in we are intrigued by the prospects of it on a level but would never want to be physically involved in such activities.

Italian Neo-Realism

The Bicycle Thief; Vittorio De Sica
Hard times portrayed through the misfortune of one man; What would you do if your existence depended on one item and that item had been taken from you?
Dramatic and involving sound track. At no point is the film trying to be pleasant, it shows, in a simple way, the underbelly of the country.
